Lions Eye Hospital an appraisal

With the dream of CATARACT FREE ODISHA, members of Lions Club of Cuttack established a Temple of service in the year 1998 known as `Melvin Jones Lions Eye Hospital’. I have taken the charge of the Secretary of the Hospital Trust after the most unfortunate and untimely demise of my elder brother and Charter Member of Our Club Lion Vipin J Doshi, MJF due to the Covid pandemic. I will put my best efforts into the further development of the hospital and to serve the poor and downtrodden people of society.

Till now our emphasis was on Cataract Surgeries because in India, 80% of blindness is due to Cataracts. Though the prevalence of cataract blindness would decrease, the absolute number of cataract blind increase from 7.75 million in 2001 to 8.25 million in 2020 due to a substantial increase in the population above 50 years in India over this period.

Now, we have also started the Retina Section in our hospital. We are going to start Retina surgery soon. Diabetic Retinopathy is a priority area for Lions throughout the world. We also desire to start a State-of-the-Art Retinopathy Department.

I also desire to work for modernisation of Hospital services & full computerisation in the future.
